Fast Facts

Like most recent grads, I still have a small belief that I can change the world. To me, public relations and marketing really does run the world, and can do so for the better or worse. I spent my college career and entry-level jobs developing my public relations skills, and I have the grades and resume to prove it. I've worked hard, and at times I've felt like I changed those places for the better. And now it's the world's turn.

Milton Ruben Superstore

Social Media Specialist

August 2015 - Present

I’ll admit that a car dealership is never where I saw myself. I’ll also admit that I have the best job at our Superstore. I get to use the Sales, Service and Parts departments of our four stores (Toyota, Chevrolet, Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and Pre-Owned vehicles) as a playground. I spotlight employees, take vehicle photos, film how-to videos, hype up events and generally create strategic, engaging content for our many social networks. When I’m not doing that, I’m answering online questions and reviews and doing everything I can to put dissatisfied customers in contact with people who can actually resolve their issue. I’m lucky to work in a place where the majority of employees truly see the value in social media for a business. The hardest thing to overcome? The reputation that car dealerships have been trying to shake since before I was born.

And when I’m not doing any of that, I’m drooling over Priuses.

eSecuritel

Jr. Marketing/Instructional Design Consultant

February 2015 - May 2015

I was hired at eSecuritel when they realized just how much work goes into acquiring 750,000 new customers overnight. I worked in the Training department, with special ambassador ties to the Marketing folks as they created materials for their new endeavor. From facilitator guides to weekly newsletters, SOPs to BRDs, this position taught me about global businesses interactions and big-city traffic.

Athens-Clarke County Library

Public Relations Intern

March 2014 - December 2014

Despite what my sister says, I was not a librarian. Instead, I worked in the administration side of the Athens Regional Library System, specifically working on public relations for the Athens-Clarke County Library. This wasn't your grandmother's library, though; recently remodeled, this state-of-the-art library was a 2014 finalist for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

That meant that we had an abundance of resources...and programs. I wrote news releases and public service announcements for those events and resources while also promoting them in the two-story library through fliers and social media. I also helped with the endowment fund, fundraising and other public relations and programming-related tasks necessary for any business.

Pandora Yearbook

Editor in Chief (previously Copy Editor)

April 2012 - May 2014

Yes, the University of Georgia has a yearbook. In 2010, Pandora transitioned into an all-digital format, which has been fun getting used to. When I joined the program, I came in as the Copy Editor, which meant that every word in the book went through me. Within a year of joining, I was promoted to Editor in Chief.

During my time in charge, I managed all aspects of the executive board and general staff, which meant organizing and leading meetings. I produced the opening, closing and packaging of the yearbook while editing every page of the book and approving final edits.

I specifically took on the task of forwarding the Pandora brand through social media and other campaigns. During my era, I signed a contract with a local author to put Pandora photos in a book about Athens, Ga. This meant that, for the first time, Pandora was generating income that didn't come out of student activity fees. I wanted to give as much leadership and independence to Pandora as it gave to me.

UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences

PEER Mentor

August 2012 - December 2014

I spent the majority of my university career working for the largest college on campus. During the summer, I helped with summer orientation sessions by welcoming freshmen and transfer students and helping them change their major. Often, I handled potential meltdowns. Usually, these meltdowns came from parents.

During the school year, I scheduled undergraduate advising appointments for Franklin College students while keeping the advisers' schedules organized. I prepared, handled and reviewed paperwork concerning academic planning and answered questions regarding the various websites designed to help students succeed in college.

Was I the glue that holds the university together? You tell me.

UGA Creswell Learning Communities

Peer Adviser, Mass Communications Learning Community

April 2013 - May 2014

When I was a freshman, I was a part of the Pre-Law Creswell Learning Community. While I was officially pre-law for less than a month, I enjoyed my time with my LC so much that I was offered a job as the Peer Adviser for the Mass Communications LC, which was much more my speed. I was half teaching assistant, half guidance counselor as I helped guide 12 pre-journalism students through their freshman year, opening their eyes to all of the opportunites that the university had to offer.

I was responsible for scheduling guest speakers from the Athens and UGA community to come talk about how journalism, public relations, advertising and broadcasting affected their lives and careers. I arranged tours and other activities on and off campus to spark a motivation for college, not just journalism.

Athens-Banner Herald

Communications Intern

May 2013 - October 2013

As an intern for the Athens-Banner Herald and OnlineAthens.com, I spent most of my time working with the Spotted program, which focused on photographing and blogging about local events in Athens, Ga. This required organization, professionalism and enough motivation to learn how to work a fancy camera. While I ended the internship with a lot of experience under my belt, the best thing I learned was to love my city.

Learn Your Brain

Social Media Intern

March 2013 - August 2013

I've said it before and I'll say it again: everyone should work for a startup at some point. I especially learned how integral public relations is to the first few years of a company, and how everyone pitches in to market the brand. Learn Your Brain is a small tech company focused on helping students and professionals harness their potential through brain-strengthening exercises and personalized strategies.

I was the company's first social media intern, so I revolutionized the Facebook page and created the Twitter account. I spent a large amount of time searching for and creating content for the social media accounts as well as the Learn Your Brain blog, which involved a lot of science. I left my internship with several study tips and a lot of new big words to use.

The Red & Black Newspaper

Marketing Team Intern

January 2013 - May 2013

Though I came into college with the intention of pursuing a job as a reporter for the Red & Black, UGA's student newspaper, I instead joined their marketing team for a semester. While most of my time was spent strategizing with the team about how to increase off-campus distribution and how to build relationships with local readers and businesses, I will always remember the assignments I had that focused on the reader survey that we distributed to UGA students. It was a long process full of research, editing and reminding each other about the target audience, but I think it helped the paper become a better organization. It helped me understand the importance of research and behind-the-scenes marketing, which led me to succeed in my off-campus internships.

University of Georgia

2011 - 2014

I came into college as an English major, but quickly switched to Journalism with a minor in German. By the end of my freshman year, I was completely smitten with Public Relations, and I never turned back. Don't worry, I kept the German minor.
